UAE National Flag Day - Forever In Peace, May You Wave

Why Do We Celebrate UAE National Flag Day?

UAE’s third National Flag Day set to be held from 3-7 November as approved by Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development – Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak al Nahyan – this year.

The UAE Flag Day is a national occasion where we remember the efforts of our founders. It represents citizens and symbolizes dignity, pride, achievements, safety, peace and happiness.

Flag Day is a day when all of us who live in the UAE, both Emiratis and expatriates can come together to raise the flag and express pride in the accomplishments and show recognition towards what we have.

When Is the UAE Flag’s Birthday?

The UAE flag was adopted on December 2, 1971 and hoisted by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, declaring the establishment of the United Arab Emirates as an independent and unified country.

Who Designed The Flag?

The flag was designed by a young Emirati, Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, after he read an advertisement announcing a competition for designing the UAE flag. Approximately 1,030 designs were submitted for the flag design, out of which the present flag was selected.

What Do The Colours Of The UAE Flag Represent?

While the UAE’s flag is made up of the traditional pan-Arab colours, what those colours represent is important in a very special way.

  • Red – Hardiness, bravery, strength and courage (the vertical red band can also be interpreted as binding all the other meanings together in unity)
  • Green – Hope, joy, optimism and love (it can also symbolize the country’s prosperity)
  • WhitePeace and honesty, white is the purest colour and is interpreted by some to symbolize cleanliness
  • Black – Defeat of enemies and also strength of mind
